Vanishing Landscapes was juried and selected by a committee organized by 48 Stunden Neukölln, the largest independent festival of the arts in Berlin. The district of Neukölln was transformed, for 48 hours, into an art hub filled with galleries and unique spaces that attracted more than 70,000 visitors.  The 2019 festival theme was Future III (Future Perfect Continuous Passive). Ideally, viewers had an idea of which obstacles must be overcome in the future.
Huss' Vanishing Landscapes, focused on habitat loss linked to pollution, deforestation, rising sea levels and extreme weather events.  The large-scale installation was composed of fifteen pieces of double-sided Kozo paper that hung from the ceiling, each spanning 18" wide by 10' long.  Viewers were encouraged to wander through the environment depicting submerged islands.  The installation was accompanied by fifteen mixed-media prints that contained imagery influenced by deforestation, melting glaciers and extreme weather events.
The process of creating the art involved a foundation of watercolor paint or china marker on Japanese Kozo paper.  Then, thin layers of natural pigments combined with beeswax were painted on a smooth, heated hot plate.  Once the paper was pressed into the wax, a baren was used on the backside of the paper to soak in the image.  The final result is a one of a kind, mixed-media print or encaustic monotype.
The installation will be exhibited at Gallery UNO Projektraum for one year including Berlin Art Week from September 11th to 15th.  The small-scale encaustic monotypes will travel to Italy for Rome Art Week and be on display from October 21st to 26th at the Artists Studio Rome.

Werdegang / Ausbildung:
